It’s time to announce Battle for Wesnoth 1.2. This is a open-source game that i’ve been involved with for 2 or 3 years. It’s developed by volunteers and is completely free. It’s a turn-based strategy game, with simple rules, which, like chess, are quite difficult to master. I find it much more enjoyable than chess, not only because it has better graphics, but because to play successfully you must be able to respond to the unexpected. Attacks are not always successful.

I’ve created or modified many of the terrain graphics, and done some work with the interface and units. It’s a cross between an artistic and an analytical challenge to make terrain graphics that transitions properly with each other and other terrains around them. I actually spend more time making the game than playing it.
So if you like strategy games, give this one a try. A word of warning: if you do try it out, play first on the easiest setting— it will still be challenging.
The following is a combination of terrains that i’ve completely or mostly made. I’ve done quite a bit more, but most of that was collaborative work, my modifications of early, lousy work, which might be modified several more times.
